Baby-Phobia…

Is there any medical names for baby phobia?  I realise that I’m really afraid of babies.

The nurse wheeled in the baby today when I was at the hospital, accompanying my sis while Kelvin went back home to clean up the baby cot and stuff.  First, the baby stared at me from across the bed.  Then I stared back.  And he just kept staring at me, without blinking, even.  I got a little unnerved, and started pacing around the room.  Then unconsciously, I walked over to his little plastic “bed-on-wheels”, and peered at him.

Okay, I know what happened next was probably not because of me, but it didn’t help to know that I’ve always caused babies to cry by just being near.

Dylan suddenly started coughing, and started to fidget quite a lot.  Then he opened his mouth and he sure sounded like he was choking.  I was scared out of my wits.  Then he started crying.  Those kind of helpless cries, not wilful ones.  Basically I was totally spooked and just… don’t know what to do.  My sis struggled to get up from her bed to carry him, but I was too uh, “out of it” to help her.  She managed to scoop Dylan into her arms and coo-ed to him, but he just continued crying.  So poor thing!

So I was like, uh want me to press the emergency button???  My sis said yeah.  Then I went around like a crazy woman trying to locate the where the hell the emergency button was.  I recalled it’s usually hung around the bed, but for some reason I just couldn’t find it.  Finally, I found it hanging next to the wall instead.  So I pressed the button, and waited for the nurse to come in.  Dylan was still crying pretty helplessly, and started to pant.  Like, breathless, you know?

So I panicked again, and paced around the ward, wondering what took the nurses so long.  Then I asked my sis, “Should I go out and ask them to come in???”  Then my sis was like, yeah you could.  Then I ran out of the ward, trying to get the nurses’ attention.  They told me that yeah, they were on their way.  Then when I get back into the room, the baby had calmed down somewhat.  (Maybe it’s because I had left the room?)

My sis then explained that Dylan had a lot of mucus in his throat, so it might be the reason why he was choking a bit as his body naturally tried to get rid of it.  Well, that might be the reason, but it didn’t help that he only started crying when I peered at him over his secure plastic bed.  >_>;

Gah, I hence conclude that I’m not a baby-person, and I’m just not comfortable with babies and vice versa.

Took a photo of him today, and got my sis to send me another photo which my bro-in-law had taken yesterday.  Here’s Dylan for you!

Dylan, just after his meal.

Say ‘hello’!

Don’t rush, Scottie! My niece was born last year and I was totally freaked out too, initially. I couldn’t even hold her because she was so soft and fragile. And there was a period of time when she’ll burst into tears just from sitting on my lap for two seconds :(

But now, seven months on, I’m carrying her around and she just giggles happily. She even holds out her hands to me, her signal of “PICK ME UP AND LET’S PLAAAY” :p

Just watch how other people handle her to get an idea of what you’re supposed to do. Then when someone’s around, ask him or her to stand by like a safety net as you attempt to hold the baby. Or ask him/her to put the baby into your lap – better to start by sitting down, you’ll feel less stressed out. It’s really just a matter of getting used to the baby and realizing that actually, babies are quite hardy after all.

Good luck and enjoy the experience of being an Aunt! I know I’m loving every single minute of it :) Congrats to you and your family!

I’m pretty freaked out by babies myself- I almost never carry them and have almost no maternal instinct. I would probably be just as stunned as you are if I encountered a situation like that :x Babies (And kids) stay away from me as well XD

Baby Dylan is cute though! :D

Rinny: Aaaahh… thanks for your advice, but but… I really don’t like babies too much… if you know what I mean. xD But well! If one day I feel that I’m up to the challenge of trying to be near my nephew, I’ll remember your advice! :D

Yuka: *nods vigorously* I’m glad I’m not the only one T_T

And yup, can’t deny that my nephew is cute! (Although all babies kinda look alike, in a way… @_@)

Yo yo yo… I am also afraid to hold any babies that are less than a year old… so its not only u… I think is mainly because we do not have any experience with babies ba…

    BTW congrats to your sis!

CY: Xie xie! I’ll send your regards to her :) Eh.. the problem with me is that even after they are more than just a baby, I still don’t dare to hold or carry them. And when they grow older than that, I’ll start to find them a nuisance… hahaha….
